Viva Roma

Here I am in the OLD city of Rome! Our KLM flight from Amsterdam to Rome was smooth, and I kept getting more excited to see all of the history here.

Why, you might ask, did I come to Rome? Simple.
I chose to fly KLM because they had the lowest airfare. Since KLM is based in Amsterdam, all flights go through that airport (hence, our layover). It was more expensive to go straight to Athens from Amsterdam than it was to go to Rome and then Athens. There is an abundance of mythology in Rome so I knew it was be well worth my time.

Today, I've planned to visit Vatican City - a sovereign city state within Rome. Picture about 100 acres with tall brick walls around it. That's what Vatican City is. It looks like a huge park, but it is its own city surrounded on all sides by the city of Rome. Less than 1000 people are considered residents of Vatican City, compared to the 3 million that live in Rome.

While in Vatican City, I'll walk around St. Peter's Square and Basilica (which houses Michelangelo's La Pieta) and tour the Vatican Museum (which houses the Sistine Chapel, numerous pieces of mythological art, and the VERY famous Belvedere Torso - a partially preserved Greek statue from the 1st century BC.

Wish me luck!
